Stepped down from the Roof of the World | The people that left Tibet
Still, methods of torture, imprisoning and persecution are routine and widespread in Tibet according to several human rights organizations.
It was when I visited a small Tibetan refugee camp in India I realized how little I know about this situation. I decided to investigate the situation of exile Tibetans, why they are still fleeing their country and why we rarely hear about it in the media. If we did, maybe more pressure could be put on the Chinese government to stop the oppression of the Tibetan people. I went to Tibet in May last year to get some more understanding about the situation. Much might seem normal at a first visit in Tibet, but the extreme military presence tells another story.
Outside Tibet and China people can talk more freely to journalists. To continue the project I will therefore meet the people that have left Tibet. Dharamsala, where the exile government is seated, as well as in other parts of India, Nepal, Taiwan, Switzerland and Sweden will constitute the foundation of the project. Through images and interviews I will try to get answer my questions. Why have they left? What have they been through? What do they fear and what do they see for the future, for themselves and for Tibet?
